Category: Competition wraps

The Groms were first out and they ripped the small waves to bits. Having watched these kids development over the winter you can’t help but be impressed with the standard of surfing and just the overall enthusiasm these kids have for surfing.

The micros surfed a nice bank down at Southend and all these kids had a ball. In the Boys it was little Max McGuiggan who showed plenty patience waiting for the bigger ones who won the day narrowly beating his 2 good mates Tye and Chris. Both could of won it in the final minutes but Max held on. In the Girls it was Tayla Buchan who narrowly beat Kirra and here sis Chloe.

1st Max McGuigan  2nd Tye Koolis  3rd Chris Riley

1st Tayla Buchan 2nd Kirra Lowlett Richards 3rd Chloe Buchan

In the super competitive Cadets division Harry, Hank, Rory Jackson Giles and Jarrod Sorley made it through to the final after some impressive surfing in the early rounds. Harry B started off with the wave of the final straight up and at the midpoint of the final had a handy lead. Hank came back at him but Harry got a gem and 2 nice cutties confirmed his lead. All the boys had one last crack as a set hit as the buzzer sounded but none could better their scores. Well done to Harry and all the Cadets. Some great surfing by all the boys

1st Harry Bartlett 2nd Hank Hartley 3rd Rory McGovern 4th Jackson Giles 5th Jarrod Sorely

In the Junior Boys Jake N, Mitch K, Sean Mc and Scott Barry surfed their way into the final after surfing really well through the opening rounds. Unfortunately there was a real wave drought during the final but when the waves did come through the boys tore the waves apart. Jake and Mitch caught nice opening waves and were in the box seat as the heat went on. A good sized set came through and it was again Jake and Mitch that got the good ones  producing some nice top. Jake managed to get his all the way to shore and finished it up with a nice floater and he took the lead. Mitch had one last crack but the wave fizzed out and young Jake took the spoils.

1st  Jake Norma 2nd Mitch Kennedy 3rd Sean McGreevy 4th Scott Barry

The Open Women’s Final was a tightly fought out affair with all ladies in the running until the final minute. It was a slow start but once the sets starting coming through all the girls let rip. In the tightest final of the day with only 2 points separated 1st to 4th. Vanessa managed to just get over Lisa B with Leanne and Jen in 3and 4th respectively.

1st  Vanessa R 2nd Lisa Brodie 3rd Leanne Bonello 4th Jenni Lee

In the Men’s divisions conditions certainly favoured the lighter lads. Nevertheless it didn’t stop anyone with some sensational surfing in the tiny conditions. You just had to be patient and wait for the right ones.

The 6 man Open Men’s Final was a corker with some great surfing on display for the huge crowd on the beach. All surfers started well and Matt O and Karl held the joint lead after 8 minutes after tearing apart a couple nice little waves. Adam Semo jumped to the lead midway through smashing a nice little wave with 2 nice flowing cutties. He stretched his lead with the wave of the day a 7 point ride minutes later after 2 brilliant top turns and a huge floating re. Conyak fought back at the end catching 2 nice waves in 2 minutes but came up just short by 2 points and Adam Semo took out his 4th comp win this year.

1st Adam Seminara 2nd Con Parris 3rd Karl Richards 4th Matt O’Reilly 5th Luke Fletcher 6th Dan McNaughton

The Snr Men’s was a real battle. Roy held an early lead before Dave & Epic came back at him. But somehow Roy caught the only left that was over 2ft and went about destroying this wave to score a 5.5 and take out the Final.

1st  Roy Buchan 2nd Dave Lowlett 3rd Epic 4th Todd Jackson

In the GM Don Giles got off to a good start with a nice wave as did Brad Koolis. Andrew W came back and got 2 ok waves to take the lead meanwhile the other guys struggled to get any good waves. Brad Koolis was on the spot to pick up the wave of the heat just before the siren sounded. He got a 4.0 ride to sneak past Andrew and take the cash.

1st  Brad Koolis 2nd Andrew W 3rd Don Giles 4th Tom North 5th Graeme O’Reilly

Finally “Call of the Year” so far came from ypung Karl Richards who gave it to Adam “The Pest” Lawrence. Adds hassled the hell out of him throughout the entire semi. Karl told him where to go a few times but Adds kept going on and on. Anyways Karl had had enough when he turned to Addsy and said why do you hassle so hard when it’s 1ft but when it’s 4ft your never out here. You’re busy hassling for scraps at Chows. Adds was absolutely shattered and was last seen sulking in his car in the arms of his girls.

That was the last comp for 2008 at Maroubra. Comp 7 is an away comp which will be held at Boomerang Beach Forster on the 18th. We will be meeting at the Southern Platform at 7.30am and making a call there on where we will be holding the comp. This event is mobile if the waves are not doing it at boomers so make sure you are there right on 7.30. Hope to see you all up there for a great w/e away.

great to see nothing has changed, still struggling with waves at the end of the season? hopefully you guys get something decent this weekend boys, as it would be great for the groms to surf Seals pumping? wish I was there???
F@#K that, hope it's flat, onshore & raining suckers???????

By max @ Monday, October 13, 2008 7:15 AM
you guys have to start a Trophy for "Years Greatest Quote", as that quote by Karl was F@#ken sweet? Make Hellman Buchan still isn't running the quote, "shoulda seen it an hour ago, it was pumping?"

By Public Enemy No. 1 @ Tuesday, October 14, 2008 6:10 AM
Max, never seen you out in the surf when it was over two foot. Actually, hardly ever saw you in the surf. You should not bag anyone as you were and always will be considered a kook.

By max @ Wednesday, October 15, 2008 2:42 AM
Peckerhead, who's bagging, just thinking what a great comment coming from a Grom? Great to see the groms giving it back to 'em, as if the groms didn't stand up for 'emselves, then we'd bag 'em for being poofs? As for not being out the surf, gotta say I don't think I'd bother now pushing myself to come down the "Bra, when every second guy is a "Mad C@#t" and when you get pretty sweet waves up here with a handful of guys, can't grab me? Maybe I might come down next year for the Baxter, but in saying that, at least some of us put our names to our Blogs? Don't worry gorgeous, "don't know ya, but I love ya?"

By Madman 69 @ Wednesday, October 15, 2008 4:51 AM
Public Enemy Number 1, are you serious? If you could read what was said, no one was actually bagging anyone, but more to the point, saying what a classic comeback by one of the grommets? No need to get to personal either, as if your aim was at Max De Luca, he has done a bit for Southend, as well as Maroubra itself, but had to move due to his son's health? Not a good look bagging a guy who was in the Boardriders from Day 1? As for his question about getting the "Quote of the Year" as a prize, that would be a great hoot at the Presso, with all the quotes of the year. Try to remember, when you have a family one day champ, your priorites change, plus get off the Choof......

By harry2035 @ Wednesday, October 15, 2008 8:56 PM
Are you guys fair dinkum? Is this boardriders becoming a club of F@#ken stiffs? Public Enemy No 1, maybe you should learn about quotes & inuendo's before carrying on like a good sort. Reading the comments about what was said about Addsy, it was hilarious? No one was bagging anyone? If you ever surfed with Roy, no matter how good it was, it was better before? Tongue in Cheek mate, not bagging? I don't think Max was actually bagging anyone, just saying it would've been funny seeing & hearing this little fracus? The word "Kook" isn't a good word to use either towards a fellow club member? No matter how good, or bad someone surfs, remember where we are all from, MAROUBRA? Last time I checked, Blake Thornton's our last real "Ripper", but then again, everyone rips in their own minds, don't we? I agree with Madman, get this "Quote of the Year" prize happening, it is great for the Club, as in the end, all of us love a good quote. Sounds like there is some anomosity amongst the boys, but last time I Checked, didn't Max f@#k off to QLD to live, F@#ken Cane Toad.......

Too funny, we moved 2.5 years ago, and you guys still miss me? God dang, I wish the boys from Mudjimba Boardriders loved me this much. Thanx to all my fans & therapists, love youse all fo your support? Life is too short, don't take it so Seriously Public Enemy No 1, I wasn't dissing Addsy, just found it funny in picturing that happening, Karl blowing up a treat, when the grom is so quiet.
Peace out boys, wish you were here? hahaha

By max @ Monday, October 20, 2008 12:19 AM
Now Mr Public Enemy No. 1, as you should know, we've always been a "Tight" Boardriders Club, with years ago the rumour of a Poof in the Club? Like I said before, love ya like brother, but please no Incest, grommets read the Website.... :-)

By Pete @ Monday, October 20, 2008 8:48 AM
I'm love nothing better than a bit of banter with mates but some of these comments are taking it one step to far for this type of forum.Either settle this dispute the old fashion way - Arm Wrestling. Winner take all or sort it out offline. It's not a good look for the club. Imagine your were a potential sponsor or a parent wanting to bring their kids along to join the club next yr read this type of trash. You wouldn't want anything to do with us. Keep that in mind next time you post something Public Enemy you goose!!!!

By max @ Monday, October 20, 2008 4:39 PM
Love ya Pete?

By Jim Gibson @ Tuesday, October 21, 2008 2:46 AM
Well said Pete, there's a line between baggin ya mates & being a pest! PEN1 check behind ya feet.
PS Max, loved the photo of your back yard but must be a bitch to mow.

By Hickey @ Tuesday, October 21, 2008 7:52 AM
Wow...

By max @ Wednesday, October 22, 2008 1:02 AM
Hey Gibbo, if the mower doesn't get wet, Happy Days? Gotta love WD40, gets it going everytime? The guy who owned the island for over 20 years, Peter Troy, just passed away 2 weeks ago. There's still a little shack on it, but now a Water Reserve? Bring back Kong to live out there.

By harry2035 @ Thursday, October 23, 2008 2:05 AM
Maybe when you join at the beginning of the New Year, you get given a Club Number, so when you register for the Blogs, you know who is saying what? This would help the flips who want to hide behind aliases, and then fire crap at people for unknown reasons. I think the site is great for people to check out what's doing on the club front, especially the people who have moved away. If people want their inner habits to take over, hear voices of people they think bagging them, run the chance of hurting some of us keeping in contact with our club members, give it up, grow up & show some brains.......
