much to the displeasure of Addsy, Todd Jacko, Andrew "The Competitor" Williams and Con. Addsy's blow up was all time and he is well on your way to winning the dummy spit of the year after that effort. That’ll be 5 in 7 years…..Anyways boys this means that it’s your 5 best scores from six comps that count towards determining the overall champ in your divisions.
The Cadets got things rolling early up with Hank Hartley, Dan Coote, Dyl Woods, Tom Kurz and Jarrod Sorely ripping in the early heats. Jackson Giles and Harry Bartlett surfed well in the semis to make the final along with Tommy, Rory Mc, Dan and Hank. The Final was a cracker. Dan got off to a flyer catching a sick wave and ripping off 2 great re’s as did Hank who got the wave of the heat. A couple of nice re’s finished off with nice floater. A 7 from all judges and he was looking good to take out another final. Rory, Tom and Harry all got good ones midway through to make it a 5 way tussle for the lead. But Hank sat their patiently and picked off a sweet one and was back in the lead with 4 to go. Jackson caught 2 high scoring waves in 3 minutes at the death but it wasn’t enough to knock off Hank. Well done mate win no 2 this year.
1st Hank Hartley 2nd Jackson Giles 3rd Dan Coote 4th Rory McGovern 5th Tom Kurz 6th Harry Bartlett
The Micro groms surfed the nice little left down the beach and in the girls division it was Meg Woods and Tayla who caught great wave to start the heat. Chloe and Kirra also surfed some great little waves during the heat but on the last wave of the heat Tayla dropped into a clean little peeler which she rode right to the beach to take the Final.
1st Tayla Buchan 2nd Meg Woods =3rd Chloe Buchan & Kirra Lowlett Richards
In the Micro Boys Chris and Will got things rolling catching some great waves early on. Max and Tye came back and it was anybody’s game with 5 to go. A set approached and Chris Max and Tye had one last chance to catch Will. Unfortunately they all fell short and Will took out his 1st comp win ever.
1st Will Johnston 2nd Max McGuigan 3rd Tye Koolis 4th Chris Riley
Congrats to Tayla and Will and to all the other kids. They had a ball out in the fun waves and it was great to see them all grinning from ear to ear after the surfs.
Mia Wearne got off to a flyer in the junior girls final catching a clean little left and hooking a nice backhand turn off the top. Hayley also got a couple of good waves but Mia leapt to the front after another great left with 5 to go. That’s the way it stayed. Congrats to Mia. Win No 2 for the year
1st Mia Wearne 2nd Hayley Frasa
Vanessa, Leanne, Kaya and Darcie contested the Open Women’s Final and Vanessa caught a smoker and pulled off 2 nice clean cutties to start the heat. Leanne shot straight back catching a good one. Unfortunately for Darcie and Kaya they couldn’t find the ones that to give them the score. With 5 to go Vanessa got another small one to extend her lead and as time was running out Leanne had one more chance but unfortunately after a nice clean re the wave shut down and it was game over. Win no 3 for Vanessa this year. Well done
1st Vanessa Richards 2nd Leanne Bonello 3rd Darcie Bellanto 4th Kaya Strehler
Mitch Kennedy, Sean Mc, Sam B and Jordan P surfed well in the Junior Boys Semi to make the final but it was young Jake Nurmi who was on fire ripping the bag and scoring 15 from 20 from his 2 best waves. The best heat score of the day by a long way. Mitch Kennedy bolted from the gates in the final catching 2 great waves in 5 min to take a commanding lead. Jordan and Sam caught a sneaky set towards the southern end of the comp area and both pulled some stylish moves to get some great scores. Unfortunately Jake and Sean couldn’t reproduce the scintillating form of their semi in the big one. Another set pushed through on the same bank for Sam and Jordan and they both had one more throw of the dice. They needed a 5.5 or better to knock Mitch from the top spot. 2 flowing backhand hacks from Jordan before the wave shut down only gave him a 5. Sam ripped 2 great re entries followed by a nice cutty. Was it enough. The judges thought so - 6.5 and the final was his. What a great way to end the day. Great stuff Sam.
1st Sam Barron 2nd Mitch Kennedy 3rd Jordan Perez 4th Jake Nurmi 5th Sean McGreevey
The day ended with an expression session. Judges looked for the Best Wave and the Best Air. Adam Semo took advantage of the empty peaks early and boosted a couple of massive airs. His air 360’s was unbelievable and he easily took out the award for Best Air. Blake Garnett, Con and Matt O ripped the waves apart as did many of the youngsters but it was young Dustin Cooley who caught the eyes of the judges and the crowd on the beach. He surfed well catching some nice waves but the fact he was going for it whilst surfing in the nude left all on the beach in stitches and the judges had no option but to give him the prize.
A great day was had by all. Thanks to Hugh from the Village Butchery for the great tucker and to the folks at Dripping Wet for all the prizes. See you all down there @ 7am for Comp 4 on the 28th June.
