The NSW Open Surfmasters decides ten (10) State Titles including the Opens, Over 28, 35’s, 40’s, 45’s and 50 year's Men divisions. Led by a crop of professional stars, from past and present, including former ASP World Tour surfer Toby Martin (Dee Why, NSW), Pro Junior stars Sam Lendrum (Nords Wharf, NSW), Ryan Callinan (Merewether, NSW), Jake Sylvester (Bar Beach, NSW) and reigning Open champion's Perth Standlick (Bondi, NSW) and Brittani Nichol (Cabarita, NSW) the NSW Surfmasters sees surfers from each of the ten Surfing NSW regions compete for state supremacy.
Thursday was a lay day due to the lack of swell but saw conditions increase overnight with a pulsing south swell. Excellent one-metre waves then graced the picturesque contest location of Werri Beach as conditions continued to provide near-perfect, metre-and-a-half walls over the final days of the contest. The best surfers in the state went ballistic - throwing down a plethora of excellent scores, as they searched for qualification to the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival.
Southend Boardriders, Con Parris and Karl Melo-Richards both surfed in their prospective divisions. At this level all divisions are tough but both surfers can hold their heads high surfing really well. Con Parris managed to make the quarter finals in over 40’s division and finished 4th in over 35s. Cons results means he now qualifies for the Australian titles on the 22nd of August at Port Macquire.
Congratulations also to Max Ashford who won the Men’s Open Division and Open Women's champion Brittany Nichol who won back-to-back titles with a dominant display of power surfing.
