What the judges consider when scoring:
* The competitors earn the higher scores by performing the higher quality maneuvers. Generate speed and show power throughout the execution.
* The judges look at what the competitors are doing right - not for their mistakes. This will prevent the judges from holding down scores on good and excellent waves. Maneuvers must be completed 100% in order to score.
* The judges will reward good and excellent surfing with good (6.0 to 7.5) and excellent (8.0 - 10.0).
* The judges will not reward poor surfing. Competitors may surf poorly on quality waves for a long distance, however the fact remains - it’s still poor surfing no matter how long the ride. Judges are looking for quality not quantity.

NOTE: No points are awarded for length of ride no matter how many speed-res you are doing.

Judges will utilize a 75-25% ratio being that surfers will only ever get a maximum of 75% (7.5pts) of the scale for surfing only one aspect of Modern or Traditional, up to an additional 25% (2.5pts) can be added when the two aspects are combined. Incomplete maneuvers will not be rewarded.

The above means that if you do not do any progressive surfing (tail slides, aerials, etc) you can be awarded a maximum of 7.5 out of 10 ... Barrels are excluded or may be considered in the progressive category. (You can get higher than 7.5 with an epic barrel)

Looks like we could have some 3 - 5ft waves on offer on Saturday, atleast that's what is being forecast and what we would love to be getting.
1-2ft waves for the rest of this week until then. Should be interesting to see who pulls out the big turns and who shoulder hops / barrel dodges on the sets.

Informative post Epic. I plan on being there for most comps this year and will be writing commentary in the forums.
I will start now with some pre first comp banter, so make sure you check it out and leave some input.

Red hair? RED HAIR? I was about to that that you are lucky you have hair at all, but not if it's red.
