Opening Round of the Wahu Groms Comps was held in Newcastle on the weekend of 14th- 15th November for surfers under 15 to compete in a professionally run contest & scoring format Congratulations to Tye Koolis who competed in the under 9’s division who came 4th in the final The contest was held over 2 days, Saturday clean (3 – 5ft) greeted the competitors at South Bar Beach but when the under 9’s hit the water there were some very challenging conditions around. Tye progressed through to round 2 held later that day, and after winning that qualified for the semi finals held the next day. Sunday dawned the swell had dropped to a clean (2 – 3 ft) waves. Tye again continued his run by coming 2nd in the semi thus qualifying for the final. The final was an awe inspiring affair with the true “micro-grommets’ of the event displaying surfing ability beyond their years. Winning the title was Mikey McDonough (North Curl Curl). In a very close tussle for 2nd that was only decided in the last 5 minutes were Kurtis Vaughlan (Bateau Bay) 3rd Finn Askew (South West Rocks) 4th Tye Koolis (Maroubra). Wahu should be congratulated on the running of the event and if the 6 other events around Australia are held in the same manner as no doubt they will, this series will be a highlight for years to come Congratulations again Tye and good luck at Dee Why for event 5 of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps
