The sun shone bright as surfers and celebrities alike slapped on the sunscreen and came together in support of the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Smiles, laughter and fun were on the cards for all competitors as they lapped up the semi-serious event, to cheer on fellow their surfers. Although all in the name of ‘charity,’ there was still a surfing title on the line and everyone came to surf.
Moyes, Seminara and Sorely had an uphill battle from the start losing their opening heat and drawing their second only to progress through the repecharge round. “We had a bit of luck on our side early on as everyone was surfing pretty tight, though we finished strongly with some very close scoring,” said Sorely. Talented youngster Moyes posted the highest combined score in the final to help his team secure the win. Wave conditions worsened as the day progressed and landing a decent ride was harder to come by according to Moyes. “It was good fun out in the water even if the waves lagged a little; I had a great time surfing for such a worthy cause” said Moyes.

The aim of the day was to raise awareness of the foundation, which delivers innovative programs designed to make children happy and lift their spirits when they need it most. Former ASP World Tour surfer John Shimooka (Cronulla, NSW) took to the waves like the days of old and said that he felt kind of ‘spoilt’ with his surfing childhood and that it was a pleasure tosurf in aid of seriously ill children. Unfortunately Shimooka’s team was knocked out in the quarter finals. “These kids battle each day to survive. If surfing here today makes a difference, then I’m honoured to have helped out. Bondi Rescue star Anthony Carroll (AKA ‘Harries’) said it was awesome to surf alongside some up and coming surfing stars in support of the kids.
